Cáceres is situated in the middle of the trujillano-cacereña plateau, that runs between the basins of the Tajo and Guadiana rivers. The History and its ups and downs are a constant presence in every one of the corners of the ancient inner city. The origins of Cáceres date back to upper Palaeolithic. From this age it preserves remains such as the cave paintings of Maltravieso Caves or the dolmens situated in the areas surrounding the town.

But it was Romans who urbanized it after having been founded in the year 34 B.C. by the roman proconsul Cayo Norbano Flacco, who named it Norba Caesarina. Some vestiges of this era are the wall rampart basis, the main rampart gate now known as The Arch of the Christ; or the remains that appeared recently in the courtyard of the Mayoralgo palace. The resurgence of the town took place at the time of the Arabian domination, by rebuilding the old roman walls and leaving marks of its advanced culture on many buildings.

Cáceres reached its splendour at the time of the Christian Reconquest by King Alfonso IX, and its close relationship with the discovery of America. In Cáceres, palaces and ancestral homes were built by many aristocratic families, whose wealth were increased because of the treasure brought from the other side of the Atlantic.

But If during the day a visit to the monumental city offers visitors a real idea of the importance of the valuable historical city reserve, an evening walk trough the calm streets and squares adds the magic of the contrasts of light and shadow, that transfer the traveller to an period between the 15th and the 18th centuries.

The distinction of Cáceres as World Heritage site by the UNESCO in 1986 corroborates that we are before a centre of historical interest and a great importance, because of its harmony, artistic qualities and the excellent conservation of the old city.
